There is no planet B banner in a protest march on climate change

Every industry and household have a part to play to reduce global emissions and rescue our children and future generations from the burden of living in hostile conditions.

The current outlook is bleak....but we must hold on to optimism because together we can achieve great things.

If we can all consciously take small steps and make greener decisions we will create momentum and effect positive change.

CLIMATE CHANGE IS FUNDAMENTALLY THE MOST URGENT AND COMPOUNDING PROBLEM OF OUR TIMES.

GREEN
INTERIORS
& RENOVATIONS

Buildings contribute significantly to climate change through high carbon/energy emissions, material and resource consumption, off-gassing VOCs, high water usage, construction waste and landfill. A massive 57% of the green house gases produced by Australian buildings come from our existing residential housing stock.

So when we renovate our homes and buildings there is massive scope to ‘do better’. We can choose products and materials more wisely and use practices that have little or no harmful effects on the planet or to human health.

ENERGY - We can reduce energy consumption by improving thermal efficiency and choosing energy efficient appliances/fittings; Connect to renewable energy sources and/or install solar panels; Choose products and materials with low embodied energy.

RESOURCES - We can select certified and sustainable materials that can be replenished, and products with recycled content that can be recycled again at the end of their life. Reduce resource depletion by using salvaged and reclaimed materials. We can choose ‘organic’ and ‘locally sourced’.

WASTE REDUCTION - We can retain and restore some furniture and materials, re-purpose or up-cycle. Include secondhand pieces or antiques. Demolish and recycle waste responsibly.

RESILIENCE - We can live with less and choose good quality, durable, timeless pieces that go the distance. We can get climate-ready with shading and insulation; improve water conservation by choosing water efficient fittings and appliances.

HUMAN HEALTH - We can select low VOC paints, adhesives, foams, carpets and fabrics that don’t leach harmful chemicals into our homes and the atmosphere. We can create comfortable interiors that improve air quality, acoustics, optimise natural light and views; and embrace biophilic principles that promote a connection to the natural world.

Our individual projects may seem like a very small part of the cause. But every little helps. Small changes made on multiple projects by multiple designers, homeowners, builders and suppliers will have a huge environmental impact. We must drive momentum and create a ripple effect.

RSd are striving for sustainability. Michelle has become increasingly passionate about this cause over the last few years and is committed to expanding her knowledge and advocating for green interior design. She would love to discuss your renovation project and help you plan ways to make it more eco-friendly.

The action we take over the next decade is crucial.

WE MUST EMBRACE THE CHALLENGE!
